Ingredients

1 cup channa dal (substitute yellow split peas or chick peas)
1/2 cup finely chopped onion
1/2 cup chopped coriander
1/2 cup chopped dill leaves
3-4 green chilies, chopped
1/2 tsp. whole cumin seeds
Oil, for frying

Directions

  1. Wash and soak dal for 3-4 hours.
  2. Set aside 2 tablespoons of dal and grind the remainder coarsely.
  3. Combine all the remaining ingredients including the whole dal previously set aside.
  4. Mix in 2-3 tablespoons of hot oil.
  5. When mixture is cool enough to handle, shape round patties. Moisten your hands to keep the mixture from sticking.
  6. In a skillet add enough oil to cover bottom and heat to medium high.
  7. Carefully add patties to the oil. They do not need to be submersed in oil. Fry until both sides are golden brown, flipping once.
  8. Remove to paper towels to drain excess oil.
  9. Serve hot with green chutney, tamarind chutney, or ketchup
