2 tsp. coriander seeds
2 tsp. toor dal (substitute yellow lentil)
2 tsp. whole black pepper
3 whole red peppers
Pinch of asafetida (optional)
1 twig curry leaves (each twig is small and contains multiple leaves)
2 tsp. vegetable oil
Juice of 1 tamarind (lemon sized)


  1. Dry fry the coriander seeds for a minute.
  2. Combine coriander with remaining ingredients and fry in small amount of vegetable oil (less than 1 tbsp.)
  3. Remove from heat and grind in food processor to form a paste.
  4. Combine with tamarind juice, a small amount of water, and return to heat.
